Explore Stephenville

Stephenville is named after John M. Stephen, who settled there in 1854 and donated the land for the townsite laid out by George B. Erath when the county was organized in 1856.

Stephenville is the Erath County seat and is located about 70 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Agriculture is Stephenville's leading industry and Erath County is the state's leading milk producer with approximately $140 million in production.

As of the 2010 census, there were 17,123 people, 6,276 households, and 3,351 families residing in the city.

Stephenville was listed as one of the 100 best small towns in America in a book compiled by Norman Crampton and published by Prentice Hall.  It's beautiful country setting along the Bosque River adds to Stephenville's charm as an inviting, gracious community with a rich western heritage.

This town calls itself the “Cowboy Capital of the World” and for good reason.  Stephenville (and greater-Erath County) have more world-championship cowboys per capita than anywhere. These aren’t just guys who wear hats, drive big trucks, and pretend to own horses.  These are real cowboys.

They have a Cowboy Capital Walk of Fame right off the town square with plaques that honor the men and women who made an impact on Stephenville's cowboy culture. The Lone Star Arena here hosts rodeos and riding events year round.

Tarleton State University, with its approximate 10,000 enrolled students, is based here.
